Please kill the fashion legging

This week, while dress codes were a topic of conversation in the Dail, the simple legging caused a social media furore when two teenage girls were denied access to a United airlines flight due to their ‘form fitting Spandex pants.’ During the social media storm it was revealed that in actuality the girls were ‘pass riders’ and considered representatives of United, meaning that their clothes had to adhere to the no leggings dress code. So not quite the outrage originally anticipated. Standard leisure-wear cladded customers were not prohibited, and in a tweet United sent out they were keen to let their customers know,  " …your leggings are welcome!"

This stills begs the question - are the 80s throwback now acceptable everyday apparel? Leggings have been slowly slipping back into wardrobes around the country for some time, but while masquerading as gym gear. Leggings, up until now, have been treated as the opposite of a style statement. They are worn on days off, regardless of a planned gym trip. For me, this is because they’re comfortable, super flattering and might just put me in an energetic frame of mind .

Just this week, the leggings mothership, Lululemon, opened its doors in Brown Thomas, Dublin. Their leggings, with prices starting at about E100, are a far cry from those thinning cotton pairs you've bought in Penneys. Lululemon leggings, alongside brands like Sweaty Betty and Under Armour have taken the humble legging to new heights with high tech, ultra flattering fabrics, that Lululemon describes as feeling ‘wild and free, like running naked in a thunderstorm’. We’re not sure about that, but they do make our bums look good.

So where can the legging go from here? Well it seems the fashion set have taken a liking, and leggings have been seen on catwalks from Balenciaga to Celine. The general consensus seems to be that fashion leggings are acceptable, as long as the groin is covered. Gone are the days of spandex camel toes at brunch. Pair leggings under long layers like dresses and oversized shirts, along with a sandal or even a heel. They balance perfectly with the current trend for giant puffball sleeves and oversize sweaters. Invest in a luxurious pair, and they might even be comfier and chicer than your old reliable skinnys.
