Shopping fix: what I’m buying this month
Scent your home
There’s no better way to set a relaxed tone at home then with the smell of a proper candle. They can cost an arm and a leg but if you are sensitive to smell then I really feel that investing in a more expensive candle makes such a difference to the scent. I love lighting two after dinner, one in my bedroom and one downstairs. Leave the lights off upstairs and by the time you go to bed your room will be candle lit and smell heavenly. Field Apothecary makes candles inspired by Ireland with scents like Peat, Ivy, Hay and my personal favourite Rain. They are all €34.95 and available in Arnotts.
Another candle I have recently been loving is a little more expensive at €55, but if you are a scent enthusiast, then the money is worth it. Maison Martin Margiela Replica Beach Walk Candle (€55 Brown Thomas) has a scent that is described as ‘Sun Kissed Salty Skin’. I am not an expert in this field, but I can tell you that whatever it smells of, it makes me inhale deeply and let out a little sigh when entering the room. The packaging is beautiful, and the clever among you could give pot, complete with heavy metal lid, a new life once burnt out.
Bags of French style
Nothing says cool French countryside chic like a straw shopper bag. These huge, tactile and natural woven bags are the perfect holdall for a few baguettes and fresh peaches, picked up from local boulangerie. Or, you know, legging it to the local Tesco in the rain. Baal and Tanit hand paint personalised baskets and clutches in Ireland with your initials and I couldn’t love them more. Every bag is different depending on what you want, with a huge selection of colours and pom poms available. There is even a free touch up service should your painted initial chip over time. Slogan like you mean it
The age of the slogan T is upon us (again) but there is something about buying into messages that are mass produced by high street chains that just feels a little off to me. That’s why when I saw Lisa Macario’s T-shirts on instagram I had to know more. Macario hand stitches t-shirts and jumpers with whatever message you want. You can send her in a top that you want amessage stitched on to , or you can buy one of her stock Ts (which are really nice and high quality) and get her to stitch onto that. What you are left with is a really cool, personal, hand-made piece. Catch her now before she takes off, because soon there is no way she will be able to hand-stitch the quantity of t-shirts requests that will be coming her way.
Beauty in the burbs
Despite Dublin being the smallest place in the world, Burgandy Beauty in Blackrock somehow managed to remain under my radar until last week. I visited the Blackrock beauty salon after they won ‘Best Beauty Salon’ and ‘Best Beauty Therapist’ to get a St Tropez spray tan. I would not normally be one for a spray tan, preferring to be pale and interesting than ommpa-loompa. However this was for my hen party and after a long and dark winter I thought a little help wouldn’t hurt. My therapist was very friendly, quick and professional and the salon is bright clean and has parking right outside. I left the tan to develop overnight and the effect the next morning after a shower was just right. The tan also lasted about two weeks, which was much longer than I was expecting. Full body St Tropez tan is €30 see burgundybeauty.com
The way it should be Dunnes
Dunnes can be hit or miss with its clothing collections. I love everything Joanne Hynes has done, and Sonya Lennon and Brendan Courtney’s collections are always elegant, but in-house brand Savida is less reliable. That’s why when I came across this silky pink and red floral button down I was delighted. I threw the €35 blouse in with my food shop and tried it on at home while making the dinner. I’ll be wearing in tucked into high-waisted blue denims with my hair
